Infected Chaser
Slow, moaning, and never alone — the rotting heartbeat of Chernarus.
The Infected Chaser is the most common and instantly recognizable type of hostile entity in DayZ. These shambling, half-dead humanoids populate the forests, roadsides, and abandoned settlements of Chernarus, serving as the baseline threat that every survivor must navigate. They are the infection made flesh: once-human figures reduced to a single, guttural drive to find and tear apart the living.
Unlike the faster, more aggressive Runner or the low-slung Crawler, the Chaser is slow, deliberate, and persistent. It does not sprint or lunge with explosive speed. Instead, it moans, shuffles forward, and never truly gives up. In small numbers they are manageable; in the dense clusters that gather around towns and military outposts, they become a genuine wall of rotting flesh that can overwhelm an unprepared survivor.

Lore & Background
The outbreak that consumed Chernarus did not discriminate between soldier and civilian, farmer and child. What remains of those who were bitten or exposed no longer thinks, speaks, or remembers. The Chaser is the most common expression of that loss: a body still animated by some corrupted biological imperative, dragging its limbs through the mud and undergrowth with a wet, rhythmic moan that carries for hundreds of meters through the still air. Survivors who have spent weeks in the wilderness learn to read that sound the way a sailor reads wind — direction, distance, and the number of voices layered beneath it.
There is no known cure, no military containment, and no government still functioning to explain what the pathogen actually does to the brain. The infected simply exist in their thousands, migrating in loose herds through the forests, congregating around the structures where the living once gathered. They do not eat, sleep, or reproduce in any conventional sense. They simply persist, a slow tide of flesh that fills every hollow and every road.
For the survivors who still walk Chernarus, the Chaser is less a monster and more a weather system — an ambient, inescapable pressure. You do not fight the weather. You route around it, stay quiet, and pray the moaning is drifting the wrong way.
In Their Own Story
The rain had stopped an hour ago, but the forest still dripped. Kael pressed his back against the cold brick of a collapsed barn wall and held his breath, counting the seconds between his own heartbeats. Below, on the dirt track that wound through the birch grove, three of them moved in a loose arc. The nearest one — a broad-shouldered figure in the tattered remains of a work jacket — turned its head slowly, jaw working, a low groan bubbling up from somewhere deep in its chest. The sound rolled across the wet leaves and into the trees. Kael did not move. Did not blink. The Chaser's milky eyes swept the treeline, lingered, and drifted on. One by one, the three figures shuffled past, their feet crunching softly on the mud, their moaning fading into the grey distance. Kael exhaled. Then he waited another full minute before he let his fingers unclench from the grip of his machete.
Reader's Guide
Appearance: The Chaser is a full-sized humanoid figure, often still wearing tattered civilian or military clothing. Skin is greyish or yellowed, eyes are milky or dark, and the jaw may hang slightly open. They look, at a glance, almost like a person — which is part of what makes them unsettling.
Movement and attack: They shamble forward at a slow, steady pace, arms hanging or slightly outstretched. They do not run. When they close to roughly arm's reach, they lunge with a biting or clawing motion. A single hit can cause a bite wound; multiple hits in quick succession can be lethal. They are persistent and will continue approaching as long as they can hear or see you.
Spawning: Chasers appear throughout the entire Chernarus map — forests, roadsides, towns, military zones, and industrial areas. They spawn in groups of two to six or more, with denser clusters around populated locations. They are the most frequently encountered infected type.
What makes them dangerous: Individually they are slow and beatable with a single melee swing or a few rounds. In groups, however, they can surround you, and a bite wound while you are fending off others can spiral into a death spiral of infection and bleeding.
Practical tips: Stay quiet — avoid running, firing weapons, or making loud noise near dense forest or town areas. If you hear moaning, freeze and assess direction before moving. A well-placed machete or axe swing to the head is the most reliable kill. Firearms work but attract more. If caught in a group, maintain distance and pick them off one at a time, or simply back away slowly and let them lose interest. Never turn your back on a Chaser that is still moaning.
Did You Know?
- The Chaser's distinctive low moan is one of the most iconic audio cues in DayZ and is widely cited by players as the sound that defines the game's atmosphere.
- Chasers are attracted primarily by sound, meaning a single gunshot can pull a cluster of them from deep in the forest toward your position.
- In the DayZ standalone, the Chaser is the baseline infected; other types like the Runner, Crawler, and Stalker are built around the same core concept but with modified speed, posture, or behavior.
- A bite from a Chaser initiates an infection timer in the player, making a single careless encounter potentially fatal if not treated with antibiotics in time.
