Infected Shouting

It does not chase you. It calls everyone else to where you are.

The Infected Shouting is a specialized variant of the undead that haunts the roads and ruins of Chernarus. Unlike the shambling hordes or the lunging sprinters, this particular type of infected does not primarily seek to tear you apart with its teeth. Instead, its true weapon is its voice. When it detects a living player nearby, it halts in place and lets out a bone-chilling, ear-splitting scream that carries for hundreds of meters, acting as a living alarm bell that summons every other infected within earshot.

In the broader ecosystem of DayZ's infected AI, the Shouting type functions as a tripwire. It is the reason a quiet stroll through a quiet village can suddenly become a desperate sprint for your life. For players, encountering one is less about the immediate physical threat and more about the cascading danger it unleashes, making it arguably the most psychologically stressful infected encounter in the game.

Lore & Background

In the grim fiction of Chernarus, the outbreak turned the population into mindless, noise-driven husks. Most of them shamble or sprint, but a subset of the infected retained a twisted, primal vocal response to the presence of the living. Players who have survived long enough to understand the world describe the sound as a wet, guttural shriek, less like a human scream and more like a wounded animal bellowing from deep in the chest. It is the sound of something that still, in some broken biological way, recognizes that you are alive and is trying to rally the others.

The community has long theorized that these individuals were perhaps more vocal or agitated in life, or that the particular stage of their decomposition left the laryngeal structures in a state that produces sound rather than silence. Whatever the in-world explanation, the practical effect on the player is the same: one Shouting infected can turn a safe corridor into a death trap within seconds. The sound propagates in a wide radius, and infected that were idle, sleeping, or wandering in the opposite direction will all pivot toward the noise source with renewed, aggressive purpose.

Veterans of Chernarus speak of the Shouting infected with a mix of dread and dark humor. They are the reason you do not clear a building from the second floor without checking the street below. They are the reason a single gunshot in a quiet town can mean the end of your run. In a world where stealth is survival, the Shouting infected are the ultimate anti-stealth mechanic, a reminder that silence is not just a tactic but a necessity.

In Their Own Story

The rain had stopped, but the air in the village still smelled of wet ash and rot. You crouched behind the rusted husk of a Lada, watching the road through the windshield. Three infected shuffled past, heads lolling, fingers dragging in the mud. You exhaled slowly, counting to ten, then to twenty. They were gone. You stood, cracked your neck, and took two steps toward the alley between the crumbling apartment blocks.

Then you saw it. A figure in the middle of the road, facing you. Not shambling. Not sprinting. Just standing, chest heaving, mouth open in a silent O. Your stomach dropped. You froze. The figure's head tilted, tracking you with no eyes, no mind, only some ancient reflex. And then it opened its mouth and the sound that came out was not a sound. It was a pressure wave, a tearing, wet howl that vibrated in your molars and made the rain-licked glass of the Lada rattle.

You ran. Behind you, the distant shuffle of feet multiplied. One. Two. A dozen. The village was waking up, and it was all because of that one screaming thing standing in the road, still howling, still calling, still making sure none of you got away.

Reader's Guide

Appearance: The Shouting infected looks broadly similar to standard infected in Chernarus. Ragged, mud-stained clothing, exposed flesh, a hunched posture. There is no reliable visual badge that says 'this one screams.' You identify it by behavior: it stops walking, turns toward you, and its mouth opens wide. In some lighting or distance conditions, you may not see the trigger until the scream has already started.

Movement and attack: In its idle state it shambles slowly, identical to a standard infected. The moment it registers a player within its detection radius, it halts, faces the player, and emits a loud, sustained scream lasting several seconds. It does not typically lunge or chase during the scream. However, it can still be damaged and killed during the window, and if the scream is interrupted by a direct hit it may revert to a standard aggressive chase.

Spawning: They spawn in the same populated zones as all other infected: towns, military bases, villages, and along major roadways. They are not confined to a single location and can appear in any infected-dense area. Their frequency relative to other types is not fixed and can vary with server settings and map density.

Danger: The primary lethality is indirect. The scream has a large propagation radius and will cause every infected within hearing distance to pathfind toward the sound source, often converging on your exact position. A single Shouting infected in a dense town can generate a horde of twenty or more within ten to fifteen seconds.

Practical tips: The single best defense is avoidance. Keep your distance from any infected in open areas, especially in towns where the density is high. If you must fight in a populated zone, eliminate standard infected first and watch for any that stop and face you. If you trigger one, do not linger. Kill it as fast as possible with a silenced weapon or a single headshot, then immediately move perpendicular to the direction the scream is drawing others from. Running straight away from a town center often means running into the converging pack. A suppressed pistol or a single clean shot from a bolt-action at range is ideal. Never fire a loud rifle or shotgun in the vicinity of a Shouting infected unless you are already committed to a full firefight and have a clear extraction route.
