SAS

When the world ends, the SAS still hold the line in DPM green.

The SAS (Special Air Service) is one of the two principal military factions in the DayZ universe, representing British special-forces personnel deployed to the Chernarus theatre as part of the international military response to the zombie outbreak. Unlike the player-driven survivor communities, the SAS operate as a structured, AI-controlled armed force patrolling military zones, checkpoints, and forward operating bases across the map.

They stand alongside the US Army as the last vestiges of organised state power in a country that has otherwise collapsed into anarchy, infection, and scavenging. Where survivors scavenge for a single magazine of 5.56, the SAS fields full squads of soldiers in DPM-pattern kit, supported by vehicles, heavy weapons, and coordinated fire—making them among the most dangerous encounters a lone survivor can face.

Lore & Background

In the DayZ narrative, the outbreak in Chernarus was not a slow, creeping tragedy. It was a cascading collapse: hospitals overwhelmed, military garrisons overrun, and within days the country became a no-go zone for civilian traffic. The international response that followed was fragmented and under-resourced, but it did come. British special-forces elements—the SAS—were among the units committed to stabilise key corridors, evacuate what personnel could be evacuated, and hold strategic positions against the ever-growing horde.

What makes the SAS distinct from the broader US Army presence is their special-forces character. In-game they appear as tighter, more disciplined squads, often operating in smaller cells rather than the larger platoons associated with the US Army. Their kit—recognisable DPM camouflage, British-pattern helmets, and a mix of L85-pattern rifles and heavier support weapons—marks them on the field as a different breed of soldier. They are not the ragged, desperate survivors you see in the ruins of Ilovka or the outskirts of Cherno; they are the last professional soldiers in a country that no longer has a government to answer to.

Their presence in the DayZ world is a reminder that the outbreak did not simply erase civilisation overnight. For a time, there was an attempt to contain it, to draw a line, to hold a perimeter. The SAS are the ghosts of that attempt—still standing, still firing, still following orders from a chain of command that may no longer exist beyond the radio static.

In Their Own Story

The radio crackled with a frequency that had been dead for three days. Then a voice, clipped and flat, cut through the static: "All elements, this is Green Four. We are holding the checkpoint. Repeat, holding. Do not engage the horde until the convoy clears."

Marek crouched behind the rusted hull of a T-72, his hands shaking around a half-empty AK-74. He could see them through the scope: four figures in a mottled green pattern, moving with the unhurried precision of people who had done this a hundred times. No stumbling, no shouting. Just the soft thud of boots on cracked tarmac and the occasional crack of a rifle suppressing a wave of the infected that poured out of the tree line.

One of them paused, raised a hand, and pointed at the road. The others shifted, formed a wedge, and walked forward into the grey morning as if the dead were merely a weather problem. Marek lowered his scope. He had survived two weeks in this hellscape. He had never once felt so small.

Reader's Guide

The SAS in DayZ are not a player community but an in-game military faction representing British special-forces personnel. Their origin is the international military response to the Chernarus outbreak: when the zombie crisis rendered the local government and military incapable of maintaining order, allied forces—including the SAS and the US Army—were deployed to hold strategic positions and attempt containment.

Their goal, as depicted in-game, is straightforward: hold ground, suppress the infected, and maintain a military perimeter. They patrol defined zones, man checkpoints, and engage any survivor who enters their operational area. They do not negotiate, do not trade, and do not distinguish between a scavenger and a combatant.

Territory is not a fixed border but a set of military zones scattered across the map—forward bases, vehicle depots, and road checkpoints where SAS squads and their vehicles (including armoured transport and gun trucks) can be encountered. These zones shift between server resets and updates, but the pattern remains: open roads, military compounds, and the outskirts of larger settlements.

Their key conflict is with the player. Every survivor who stumbles into a SAS patrol becomes a target. There is no diplomacy, no faction reputation to build. This makes SAS encounters among the most lethal in the game, particularly for under-equipped players who mistake a military zone for a safe scavenging spot.

Their lasting impact on the DayZ community is the sense of scale they provide. In a game where most threats are other players or the undead, the SAS remind you that there was once a world order, and that its remnants are still out there, still armed, still following orders in a country that no longer exists.
