Infected Screaming

One scream, and the whole dead world turns toward you.

The Screaming Infected is one of the most feared variants of the undead in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Chernarus. Unlike the shuffling, mindless standard infected that wander the overgrown roads and abandoned military outposts, the Screamer is a female infected whose most terrifying weapon is not its claws but its voice—a guttural, piercing shriek that echoes across the landscape and pulls every other infected within earshot toward the source of the noise.

For survivors navigating the ruins of what was once a functioning society, the Screaming Infected represents a uniquely lethal threat. A single encounter can cascade into a horde, turning a quiet moment of scavenging into a desperate fight for survival. Its speed, its scream, and its unpredictable aggression make it the infected type that veterans of Chernarus learn to respect—or avoid at all costs.

Lore & Background

In the early days after the outbreak swept across Chernarus, survivors noticed that not all of the infected behaved the same way. Some shuffled slowly, moaning and swaying. Others moved with a desperate, lurching speed. And then there were the ones that screamed. The sound was unlike anything a human throat should produce—a raw, tearing wail that seemed to come from somewhere deep in the chest, as if the airway itself had been ripped open. Those who heard it described a pressure in the ears, a ringing that lingered for minutes afterward.

What made the Screaming Infected truly dangerous was not the bite or the scratch, but the cascade. A single shriek, released when the creature caught a glimpse of a survivor or sensed movement, would ripple outward through the forests, the ruined villages, the abandoned parking lots. Within seconds or minutes, the moaning, shambling dead would stop their aimless wandering and begin to converge. The Screamer itself would close the distance with a speed that belied its rotting form, arms outstretched, mouth still open in that endless, silent scream it made even after the initial call.

Survivor communities scattered across Chernarus developed their own folklore around the screamers. Some called them 'the Bell' or 'the Siren.' Old-timers would warn younger scavengers: if you hear one, you are already too close, and the ones you hear next are the ones that will kill you. The Screaming Infected became a symbol of the world's cruelty—the dead not only hunt you, they call their friends to do it for them.

In Their Own Story

The rain had stopped, but the air still smelled of wet rust and turned earth. Maren crouched behind the shattered windshield of a grey Lada, her breath shallow, her hand resting on the pistol grip. She had been quiet for eleven minutes. Eleven minutes of not breathing, not shifting, not letting the mud slip from her boot.

Then the scream hit. Not from in front. From the tree line to her left, maybe forty meters out. A sound like a metal sheet being torn, wet and ragged, and it went on and on and on. She felt it in her molars. Felt her own heartbeat hammering up into her throat.

And then the second scream. And the third. Coming from the south. From the road. From behind the Lada.

Maren closed her eyes. Counted to three. Opened them. The world was full of them now, all turning, all converging on the point where she crouched in the mud. She didn't run. Running meant the scream again. She raised the pistol, steadied her hand on the cracked glass, and let the first one come into the grey light.

Reader's Guide

The Screaming Infected presents as a gaunt, female figure with torn, blood-stained clothing and a hunched, forward-leaning posture. Its most recognizable feature is its open, contorted mouth, frozen mid-scream even when it is not actively calling out. The skin is greyish and mottled, and the eyes are milky and unfocused. It moves noticeably faster than the standard shuffling infected, with a lurching, almost bounding gait that covers ground quickly.

Its primary attack behavior is the scream: upon spotting or hearing a survivor, it releases a loud, piercing shriek that can draw other infected from a significant radius. After screaming, it will close the distance rapidly to claw and bite. It does not stop to recover between attacks and will keep pushing forward.

Screaming Infected can spawn anywhere on the Chernarus map—forests, villages, military zones, open roads—and their frequency is comparable to other infected types, though encounters feel more dramatic due to the scream's range. They are most dangerous in groups or near dense clusters of other infected, where a single scream can trigger a converging horde.

Practical tips: if you hear a scream, immediately identify your position relative to it and move perpendicular to the sound rather than directly away, to avoid running into the converging pack. Eliminate it quickly with headshots if you engage. Avoid dense forest or village interiors where the scream carries and the horde is thick. If you are caught, sprint in a wide arc and keep moving—standing still while a horde closes is a death sentence. A suppressed pistol or a melee kill before it screams is ideal.
