RPK

Seventy-five rounds of 5.45 thunder, and the horde learns what a wall of lead feels like.

The RPK (Ruchnyy Pulemyot Kalashnikova) is a squad light-machine gun that appears in DayZ as one of the heavier, higher-tier firearms available to survivors. Chambered in 5.45×39mm and fed by a distinctive 75-round drum magazine, it bridges the gap between a standard assault rifle and a true belt-fed machine gun, offering sustained suppressive fire without the bulk of a PKM.

In the post-apocalyptic landscape of Chernarus, the RPK is a rare find—typically locked away in military installations, supply depots, or the more heavily guarded loot caches. Survivors who manage to locate one gain a significant edge in group engagements, though the weapon's weight and recoil demand experience to wield effectively.

Lore & Background

In the military doctrine of the former Soviet bloc, the RPK was designed to give a small infantry squad a dedicated automatic rifleman who could lay down continuous fire while the rest maneuvered. Its heavier barrel, longer gas tube, and drum-fed magazine set it apart from the civilian and infantry AK variants, making it a purpose-built tool for holding ground.

In the world of DayZ, those same design philosophies echo through the ruins of Chernarus. The weapon you find rusting in a military storage tent or bolted to a rack in a base camp was once part of a unit that no longer exists. The drum magazine, the reinforced handguard, the slightly longer barrel—each detail speaks to a role that required one person to absorb the fire of an entire platoon. Now that person is you, alone in the woods, and the horde is coming.

Survivors in the community often treat the RPK as a status symbol as much as a tool. Its sheer magazine capacity means fewer reloads under pressure, and its full-auto capability makes it devastating in close-quarters ambushes. But the trade-off is real: the weapon is noticeably heavier to carry, the recoil pattern is punishing in sustained bursts, and the 5.45×39mm rounds, while common, still represent a finite resource in a world where every bullet counts.

In Their Own Story

The rain had been falling for two days when Kael finally pried open the rusted storage door of the military depot outside Novy. Inside, the air smelled of wet concrete and old gun oil. He swept his flashlight across the racks—AK-74s, a couple of SVDs, crates of 7.62—and then his beam caught the unmistakable silhouette of the drum magazine, fat and round, cradled in the RPK's receiver.

He lifted it. Heavier than he expected. The metal was cold, the wood of the handguard slick with moisture. He dry-fired the trigger, felt the full-auto sear click through its travel, and imagined the sound it would make in the next firefight. Seventy-five rounds. No pause to reload while the others were still deciding whether to charge.

He slung it across his back, the drum pressing into his spine, and walked back into the grey. The woods were quiet. For now.

Reader's Guide

The RPK is a full-auto light machine gun chambered in 5.45×39mm, fed by a 75-round drum magazine. It sits at the heavier end of DayZ's firearm spectrum—noticeably more cumbersome than an AK-74 or even an M16, and it will slow your movement speed when carried. Damage per round is solid for the 5.45 caliber, and the full-auto capability lets you lay down suppressive fire that a semi-auto rifle simply cannot match. Durability follows the standard DayZ degradation model: the weapon wears down with each shot fired, and a worn RPK will eventually jam or fail to cycle. Effective range is comparable to other 5.45 weapons—reliable at medium distances, with accuracy degrading at longer ranges, especially in full-auto.

You will not find the RPK in civilian loot. It spawns exclusively in military-tier locations: military camps, military bases, and the rarer military supply containers. It is a rare drop even among those spawns, so treat every sighting as a windfall.

The RPK is not craftable. There is no recipe to build one from components. You find it or you don't. That said, you can repair it using a repair kit if it degrades, and you can swap its magazine for a spare 75-round drum if you happen to carry one.

Practical note: the RPK shines in group fights and CQB ambushes where you need to suppress multiple targets quickly. In sustained full-auto, the recoil will walk the muzzle upward, so practice short bursts—three to five rounds—rather than holding the trigger down. The drum is a double-edged sword: 75 rounds is a lot, but it is also a lot of weight to carry as a spare. If you are running light and fast, an AK-74 with a 30-round box may serve you better. If you are holding a chokepoint or defending a vehicle, the RPK's capacity and rate of fire are hard to beat.
