Magnetic Compass

A simple needle pointing north when the world has lost its way.

The Magnetic Compass is a small but vital survival tool that relies on the Earth's magnetic field to indicate direction. Its internal needle aligns with the magnetic field, pointing toward Magnetic North. This passive device requires no batteries or electronic signals, making it a reliable means of orientation in a world where modern navigation systems have failed. For survivors traversing the dense forests and open fields of Chernarus and Livonia, the compass offers a simple, durable way to maintain a sense of direction when landmarks are unfamiliar or obscured.

Lore & Background

Humans have used compasses for direction finding since the 11th century A.D. and for navigation since the 12th century. The Earth's magnetic field, generated by electric currents from convection currents of molten iron and nickel in the outer core, provides the basis for this instrument. The field's magnitude at the surface ranges from 25,000 to 65,000 nT (0.25 to 0.65 G), and it is approximately represented by a magnetic dipole tilted at about 11° with respect to Earth's rotational axis. The North Magnetic Pole, located on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada, actually represents the South pole of Earth's magnetic field, so the north end of a compass needle points toward Earth's South magnetic field. While the magnetic poles slowly move over geological time scales, they shift slowly enough for ordinary compasses to remain useful for navigation.

In Their Own Story

The rain hammered against the hood of the rusted sedan as Elias fumbled in his pack, his fingers trembling not just from cold but from fear. The forest had swallowed the road an hour ago, and without it, he was blind. He pulled out the compass, the glass face fogged by the humidity. He wiped it clean with a dirty rag, holding it steady against his chest. The needle swung wildly before settling, pointing stubbornly toward the grey horizon. North. He took a deep breath of the damp air, trusting the small metal arrow more than his own memory.

Reader's Guide

The Magnetic Compass is a passive navigation tool that aligns its internal needle with the Earth's magnetic field to indicate the direction of Magnetic North. It does not require batteries or electronic signals, making it immune to electromagnetic interference and infrastructure collapse. To use it effectively, a survivor must hold the device level and steady until the needle stops oscillating. The red-tipped end (or marked indicator) points toward magnetic north. By combining this directional data with a physical map of the region, players can orient themselves to landmarks, roads, and safe zones. The compass is most commonly wielded by long-distance travelers, military veterans who hoarded gear before the fall, and scavengers venturing into uncharted territories like dense pine forests or open steppes. While it offers no protection against zombies or hostile humans, its value lies in preventing disorientation.
