In the military doctrine that once governed the islands of Chernarus, body armor was issued in graduated tiers depending on the expected threat level. Level 4 represented the heaviest, most plate-dense configuration—reserved for special forces, armored unit crews, and high-risk extraction teams. The vest's layered ceramic and composite plates were engineered to stop full-metal-jacket rounds at close and medium range, though no plate was ever marketed as truly 'bulletproof.' Each impact that the armor absorbed chipped and cracked the composite, and after a handful of direct hits the vest became little more than very expensive canvas.

In Their Own Story

The rain had been falling for two days, turning the gravel road outside the abandoned armory into a brown slurry. Kael pressed his back against the concrete wall and counted the seconds between the distant crack of a rifle and the wet thud of a round punching through the corrugated roof above him. His Level 2 vest had already taken three hits in the last hour. He could feel the cracks spreading through the composite, each impact sending a dull bruise deep into his sternum.

He needed the Level 4. He could see it through the shattered window of the depot—three vests hanging on a rack inside the supply room, their dark plates catching the grey light. Forty meters. Open ground. And somewhere out there, someone with a scope was watching him do the same math.

He checked his magazine. Twelve rounds. He checked his watch. The rain was easing. He pulled the vest strap tight, felt the familiar dead weight settle across his shoulders, and stepped off the wall into the mud.

Reader's Guide

The Level 4 Body Armor is a found item only—there is no crafting recipe. You must locate it in the world. It provides the strongest standard torso protection in DayZ, significantly reducing damage from rifle and pistol rounds that strike the chest. However, it is not invulnerable: each bullet that penetrates or strikes the vest reduces its remaining durability, and once that pool is exhausted the armor offers no further protection. It also adds substantial weight, which measurably slows your movement speed and increases stamina drain while running.

Typical locations include military bases, forward operating posts, armories, police stations, and occasionally inside armored vehicles. Military sites are the richest source but also the most heavily contested by other survivors and, in some cases, by hostile AI in certain game modes. Always approach with a plan for a quick exit.

Practical note: equip the vest before you enter a contested area, not after a firefight has started. Pair it with a helmet for head protection, and carry at least one spare lower-tier vest in your inventory as a fallback. If you hear a round hit your chest and feel the impact but stay alive, you have one or two more hits of protection before the vest fails. Do not test the limit. Move to cover, swap vests if you can, and re-engage from a safer angle. The vest is your second chance, not your first.

• Level 4 Body Armor cannot be crafted or repaired in-game; once its durability is spent, it is gone permanently, making each one a finite resource in a long survival run.
• The vest protects the torso specifically—head, limbs, and back are not covered, so a well-aimed shot to the shoulder or skull bypasses it entirely.
• Because it is found only in high-tier military and police loot, the vest is often the single most contested item in a shared server, with multiple survivors converging on the same armory.
• In the broader DayZ community, spotting a player wearing a Level 4 vest is an immediate signal of serious intent—most casual survivors are still hunting for a Level 1 or 2.
