Level 1 Body Armor
Your first real shield against the bullets that will find you in the dead zones.
Level 1 Body Armor is the most basic tier of torso protection available to survivors in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Chernarus. It is a lightweight, utilitarian vest or plate carrier that shields the chest and abdomen from bullets, shrapnel, and blunt-force impacts, though it offers the least protection of the game's armor tiers. For a survivor who has scavenged their way out of the early days, slinging on a Level 1 vest is often the first real step toward surviving a firefight with anything more than a lucky angle and a prayer.

Lore & Background
In the early, desperate hours after the outbreak, most survivors on Chernarus are armed with nothing more than a kitchen knife, a crowbar, or a lucky shotgun found in a farmhouse. The military installations that once garrisoned the island's coasts and mountain passes have gone silent, their armories left half-open by the chaos. It is in those abandoned barracks, in the dusty supply crates stacked in basements, and on the bodies of soldiers who made it only a few days past the infection, that the first pieces of Level 1 Body Armor come to light. They are not the hardened ceramic plates that the elite troops once wore; these are the standard-issue soft vests and basic plate carriers issued to conscripts and support staff. A single round can punch through them, but they will turn a glancing shot into a bruise instead of a wound, and they will stop the worst of the shrapnel when a crate goes off ten meters away.
In Their Own Story
The rain had turned the dirt road to a slurry of brown mud, and the smell of wet pine was thick enough to taste. Kael pulled the vest over his t-shirt, the rough nylon catching on a burr that had clung to his sleeve since the last field. It was a Level 1—thin, slightly torn along the left strap, the inner padding damp from a week of carrying it in his pack. He could feel the weight of it settle against his sternum, a small, honest pressure. Not a promise. Just a margin. He checked the magazine in his AK, felt the rounds click home, and stepped off the road into the tree line. Somewhere ahead, past the rusted gate of the old logistics depot, a voice was calling. He did not know if it was a friend. The vest would not tell him. It would only be there, between his ribs and whatever came next, doing its quiet, finite work.
Reader's Guide
Stats: Level 1 Body Armor provides basic torso protection. It reduces incoming damage to the chest and abdomen but does not protect the head, limbs, or back. It has a finite durability value that decreases with every bullet impact, shrapnel hit, or significant blunt-force contact. Once durability reaches zero, the vest no longer mitigates damage. It adds a modest amount to your total carried weight, which slightly reduces your sprint stamina and top speed. It is not craftable—it must be looted.
Where to find it: Level 1 Body Armor appears in military buildings (barracks, supply depots, forward operating bases), in military supply crates, and can be looted from armed military characters. It is uncommon in purely civilian locations. In the early game it is a rare and valuable find; in the mid-to-late game it becomes a common, almost throwaway piece of gear.
Practical use: Equip the vest in your body-armor slot before entering any area where armed survivors or military NPCs are likely. It is most valuable in the mid-range engagement window—close enough that bullets are fast and unpredictable, far enough that a single round can still find you. Pair it with a helmet for full upper-body coverage. Monitor your durability: if you have taken several hits, the vest is weakened, and you should swap it out at the next safe opportunity. Do not rely on it as a substitute for positioning; it is a margin, not a shield. In a prolonged firefight, a Level 1 vest will fail faster than higher tiers, so conserve it for the moments when you cannot simply run.
Did You Know?
- Level 1 Body Armor is a consumable in practice: its durability permanently erodes with each impact, meaning a well-used vest is worth less than a fresh one, even if it still functions.
- The vest protects only the torso. A survivor wearing a Level 1 vest is still fully vulnerable to head, limb, and back hits, making it a partial rather than complete defense.
- In the early days of a new Chernarus, a single Level 1 vest found in an abandoned barracks can be the difference between surviving a first encounter and dying in a ditch, making it one of the most emotionally significant
- The vest adds weight to your loadout, creating a real trade-off: the protection it offers comes at a small cost to your sprint speed and stamina, forcing survivors to decide whether the margin is worth the sluggishness.
