Chernarus Air Base

Where the best loot in Chernarus sits under the shadow of the deadliest runway.

The Chernarus Air Base is one of the most storied and feared locations in the DayZ survival world. A sprawling military installation set against the flat, open terrain of the Chernarus steppe, it stretches across a wide expanse of concrete, corrugated metal, and overgrown vegetation. What was once a functional airfield—complete with a long runway, a cluster of hangars, barracks, a control tower, and support warehouses—now stands as a magnet for the desperate and the greedy alike.

In the post-apocalyptic reality of DayZ, the Air Base represents the intersection of high reward and high risk. Its buildings are stocked with military-grade weaponry, body armor, and medical supplies that can mean the difference between life and death on the open roads. But that same abundance draws hordes of survivors, making it one of the most volatile PvP arenas in the entire map. Few locations in Chernarus demand as much preparation, situational awareness, and cold-blooded decision-making before you even set foot on the tarmac.

Lore & Background

Before the collapse, the Chernarus Air Base served as a critical node in the region's military logistics network. Fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters cycled through its hangars day and night. The base housed hundreds of personnel—pilots, ground crew, engineers, and support staff—whose barracks, mess halls, and administrative blocks lined the perimeter of the tarmac. The control tower, the tallest structure for miles, kept a constant watch over the approach corridors.

When the world fell apart, the base became a paradox. The very systems that once kept it running—generators, fuel lines, communication arrays—fell silent, and the aircraft that once roared overhead now sit as rusting husks, their canopies fogged, their wings trailing peeling paint. Yet the armories, the medical stores, and the supply depots that had been stocked for operational readiness remained sealed and untouched. For survivors stumbling out of the wilderness, those locked rooms represent a lifeline wrapped in a death sentence.

Over the months that followed the collapse, the base earned a grim reputation among the scattered communities of Chernarus. Word traveled through whispered radio chatter and the stories of those who barely escaped: the Air Base was a place where the living came to kill. Small groups that stumbled upon it rarely made it out alone. The open runway offered no cover, the hangars created chokepoints, and the control tower gave whoever held it an unobstructed view of every approach. It became a proving ground, a graveyard, and a legend all at once.

In Their Own Story

The wind off the steppe carried the smell of rust and old jet fuel. Maren crouched behind a concrete fuel pillar, her breath shallow, her hand resting on the pistol grip of a 5.56 rifle she'd scavenged from a dead soldier three days ago. Through the gap between two collapsed shipping containers, she could see the hangar doors—half open, like the mouth of something that had been mid-sentence when the world ended.

A figure moved between the barracks and the supply depot. Alone. No pack, no visible weapon. A trap, maybe. Or maybe just another survivor as broken and hungry as she was. Maren watched for a long time, counting heartbeats, listening for the second set of footsteps that never came. The control tower loomed above, its glass shattered, its interior a dark throat against the grey sky.

She exhaled. Pulled her bandana over her nose. And stepped onto the tarmac, boots crunching on cracked concrete, heading for the hangar where the good guns waited in their locked cases. Behind her, the runway stretched empty and endless, a grey highway to nowhere. Ahead, the hangar door creaked in the wind, and the smell of oil and iron filled her lungs like a promise and a warning at the same time.

Reader's Guide

The Air Base sits on a broad, nearly featureless plain. The terrain is predominantly flat concrete and packed earth, broken up by a long central runway, parallel taxiways, and a scattering of low-to-mid-rise buildings. Vegetation is sparse—mostly dry grass, scrub, and the occasional dead tree along the perimeter. In summer the ground is baked and dusty; in winter a thin layer of snow muffles footsteps and makes the white concrete blend into the sky, changing the visual profile of every building.

Loot profile: The hangars and armory buildings hold the highest-tier military loot—assault rifles, shotguns, sniper platforms, body armor (Level II and above), and bulk medical supplies. Barracks and administrative blocks contain mid-tier gear, clothing, and food. Warehouses and support buildings offer mixed utility items, tools, and additional medical stock. The control tower's upper floors sometimes yield unique or high-value items.

Danger level: Very High. This is one of the most heavily contested zones on Chernarus. Multiple survivors frequently converge, and the open layout means you will be seen long before you see others. Expect armed groups, snipers in the tower, and ambushes at hangar doorways.

Tactical considerations: The runway is a kill zone—no cover, long sightlines in both directions. Use the building clusters for movement and repositioning. The control tower is a dominant vantage point; whoever holds it controls the fight. Hangar interiors are tight and echoey; gunshots carry, and the single wide doorway is a natural chokepoint. Approach from the tree line or scrub at the perimeter rather than the open steppe. Escape routes: the base is roughly rectangular, so the shortest exits are the north and south edges, but the east and west sides open onto longer stretches of open ground. In winter, the snow reduces noise from running but also erases your tracks, making pursuit easier for those with a vantage point.
